Rise of the YIMBYS: Over 60% of Londoners now back increased development in their neighbourhoods

On 19th June 2018, Forty Shillings and Forefront Market Research will release the findings of a comprehensive new poll that shows just how far public attitudes towards housebuilding and development in the South East have shifted – with significant consequences for politicians and developers.

The poll of 1,151 adults living in Greater London and the Home Counties reveals over 60% now support new development in their neighbourhood, across the social and political spectrum. But this is not a blank cheque – the public still care about quality as much as quantity and protecting green space, setting a tough challenge to policymakers.

The findings will reveal:

  • The types of development more likely to be supported
  • The true drivers of support for development
  • The political parties and organisations they trust to deliver
  • Their confidence in being able to achieve their housing aspirations
  • Their willingness to get involved in the planning process

The findings show how the housing crisis sits on a new fault-line in British politics and is reshaping the political landscape across London and the South East. It also reveals the public’s nuanced and complex views on housebuilding and regeneration and confounds the conventional wisdom and assumptions of policy makers and the housebuilding industry. The results also reveal the challenges, as well as new opportunities, for politicians and developers as they seek to deliver the homes Britain needs.
